Water Watch Penang (WWP) through Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has organized a sustainability-based project “Eco-Wudhu’: Green Practices of Islamic Ablution” at SK Bayan Baru.
The program was led by Dr. Mohd Amirul bin Mahamud, who is a committee member of Water Watch Penang as well as Senior Lecturer from School of Humanities, Universiti Sains Malaysia.
The main objective was to promote ways of saving water while performing ablution.
The program consists of
Chaning all traditional ablution taps to water saving taps
Conducting Eco-Wudhu’s practice training and water saving awareness campaign, and
Creating Eco-Wudhu’s banner at the school’s prayer hall (Surau sekolah)
On the 15th and 17th August 2023, Water Watch Penang successfully conducted a ‘double’ ‘River Ranger’ programme in collaboration with the Intel Malaysia CSR programme. This programme involved active engagement of Intel staff members at Quarry Park, Botanical Garden of Penang. A total of 70 participants/volunteers took part in the programme on both days.
Both programmes started with a welcoming speech from Mr. Md Hasri Md Harizan from Public Affairs, Intel Malaysia while WWP president Prof. Dr. Chan Ngai Weng attended and gave an opening speech on the 15th of August 2023. Next, the Executive Manager, Dr Hong Chern Wern provided a brief educational session centered around an introduction to Water Watch Penang, Penang’s water challenges, and water quality evaluations. The programme was aimed to educate the participants about the importance of responsible water consumption and the environmental impact caused by water wastage and pollution.

16 August 2023 – Water Watch Penang (WWP) has organised the Aqua Save Awareness Education Programme for Penang Green Office Certification for the South Island Garment Sdn Bhd factory on the 16th of August 2023.
The programme was held from 9.30 am to 11.00 am with a total of 31 employees participated in the programme.
9th AUGUST 2023 – This day signifies the occurrence of an educational session on rivers and water as part of the Negalitres for Schools Programme, organized by Water Watch Penang. The session took place at SK CONVENT BUKIT MERTAJAM, with the participation of 39 students from Standard 4, accompanied by 5 teachers, from 12.00 pm-1.30 pm.
Dr. Hong Chern Wern, the Executive Manager of WWP, commenced the session by providing insights into WWP’s background, objectives, and previous endeavors. He also shared valuable perspectives on worldwide, national, and community-specific water concerns, in addition to showcasing diverse water-conservation technologies. Next, he underscored the primary water-intensive activities within households and workplaces, while offering recommendations to diminish water usage. By shedding light on these insights, he aimed to foster a greater awareness of responsible water usage among students and teachers, ultimately contributing to more sustainable water practices for the future.
The students were engaged in an interactive session where they learned about water quality monitoring by comparing tap water and the polluted river water beside their school. A significant aspect of the activity involved instructing the students on conducting chemical tests using testing strips. This activity was assisted by four dedicated interns, Ms. Khairul Barieyah, Ms. Naaga Lechume, Ms. Divya Sree, and Ms. Tan Ying Sing. The students were divided into four groups and the interns facilitated the session by providing explanations to the students, aiding their comprehension and enabling them to distinguish between polluted river water and tap water more effectively.
