SALCON SMART WATER PROGRAMME FOR SMK (L) METHODIST SENTUL – 16 JULY 2022, TAMAN PERSEKUTUAN BUKIT KIARA, KUALA LUMPUR

16 July 2022: A total of 29 students and three teachers from SMK (L) Methodist Sentul were involved in the Salcon Smart Water Programme in collaboration with Water Watch Penang in Taman Persekutuan Bukit Kiara, Kuala Lumpur.

This was the second programme of the year under the Salcon partnership with Water Watch Penang for another participating school, targeting to educate students regarding the importance of water and the essential role of rivers as one of the water resources.

Same as the previous activity, the programme was held face-to-face, led by the facilitator leader, Dr. Hong Chern Wern, with the assistance of two postgraduate students from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Ms. Tew Yi Lin and Ms. Koo Pooi Ling, as well as two trained volunteers/facilitators from Klang Valley, Mr. Gan Vincent, and Ms. Janice Yip. From the side of Salcon Berhad, the Corporate Affairs Executive, Ms. Nor Anita Alias, and the Corporate Sustainability Affairs Executive, Mr. Kong Qi Yan, were also involved enthusiastically in this programme ensuring smooth sailing of the programme.

The activities exposed the students to Malaysia’s current water status, especially in Penang state, and how vital water conservation was to practice.

The students were split into groups, and each had to carry out the physical and chemical assessment of different measurement parameters, such as pH, phosphate, and nitrate, on the water of the park river to determine its quality. Aside from that, the students were also required to perform ‘capture, identify, and release’ of the macroinvertebrates. Each captured aquatic creature has its score, depending on its rareness. Finally, the students were needed to calculate the total amount of the score; a high score means a healthy river.

After the long run, the event ended with a certificate and souvenir presentation.
