Xylem Watermark CSR Programme with SM Sains Kuala Selangor – 22 August 2023, SM Sains Kuala Selangor.

On August 22, 2023, Water Watch Penang and Xylem SEA successfully collaborated on their second CSR program in Selangor, this time involving 60 Form 1 students from SM Sains Kuala Selangor. The program took place from 2:15 pm to 4:15 pm.

Mr. Mohamad Hapiz B Mohd Rosli, Country Head of Xylem Water Solutions Malaysia Sdn Bhd, delivered the opening remarks. As an alumnus of SM Sains Kuala Selangor, he also shared his educational and career journey, spanning from Malaysia to his decade-long experience in Japan, inspiring the students. The program then continued with an introduction to Xylem SEA and its core business by Ms. Alicia Rani Francis, Project Manager, followed by Ms. Mavinia Allagu, Engineer in Applications Engineering & Tender Support, South East Asia, and Xylem Malaysia Watermark Ambassador, who introduced Xylem Watermark and its CSR Program. Xylem Watermark’s motto, ‘Every Drop Counts’, aligns with Water Watch Penang’s motto.

Dr. Hong then conducted a water education session, educating students about global water issues such as pollution, water scarcity, immoderate water usage, and climate change. Subsequently, the students received guidance on analyzing rivers and water during a briefing by Dr. Hong, assisted by Xylem staff members Mr. K. Vikram Kovalan, Service Engineer; Mr. Khairul Azmi, Draughtsman; and Mr. Lee Seng Chow, Process Design Manager. The students were divided into 4 groups to perform chemical assessments. Dr. Hong also led a brief session on biological assessment, identifying macroinvertebrates present in freshwater environments to assess river health.

Mr. Lee Seng Chow then led a session on water treatment processes, demonstrating typical techniques from water intake to distribution tank. He supplemented this with a video to enhance students’ understanding. Dr. Hong concluded the session by emphasizing the importance of wise water usage and ways to conserve it using available technologies or individual actions. Quizzes were held at the end of the session, facilitated by Xylem staff and Dr. Hong, with winners receiving souvenirs from WWP and Xylem.

Water Watch Penang extends gratitude to the Principal of SM Sains Kuala Selangor, the Deputy Head (Ko-ko), passionate teachers, and students for organizing this CSR event. Additionally, Water Watch Penang expresses heartfelt appreciation to Xylem SEA for their assistance and looks forward to further engagement and long-term collaboration.
