Salcon Berhad-WWP River Awareness & Education Programme
12th May 2012
Venue: Lembah Kiara Recreation Park
Water Watch Penang (WWP) which is a member of Malaysian Water Partnership (MyWP) has collaborated with Salcon Berhad, in organizing ‘Water and River Education Awareness Program’ in Kuala Lumpur on the 12th of May 2012. A total of 30 elementary school children and four teachers from SJK (C) Puay Chai 2 (a Chinese Medium school) participated in this Salcon Berhad sponsored programme which was held at the “Lembah Kiara Recreation Park”, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur in a mission to discover and learn about importance of river and water education. The programme was conducted by 4 facilitators from Water Watch Penang (WWP). The main objective of the river water awareness programme is to help pupils increase their understanding of river systems and the reckless human behaviour that could contribute to unhealthy water quality.
The excited students, aged between 10 and 12, trudged along the banks of the Penchala River during that morning as they were taught how to conduct physical water samplings and carry out checks on micro-organisms found in the river during biological water samplings. Physical water sampling includes the testing of river flow and velocity, pH (acidity/alkalinity), dissolved oxygen, and turbidity. On the biological section which is the most looked-forward, the students were taught how to capture aquatic life and identify them according to a chart which indicates the level of cleanliness of the river in Taman Tun Dr Ismail.
After the morning refreshment interval, the students were treated to button-badge making session. They were required to colour on the design given for the badge and then the facilitators completed the button-badge by using a button-badge tool. Before the final wrap-up, the students were taught on ways and steps to save water in their daily activities.
