‘NEGALITRES FOR SCHOOL’ : RIVER AND WATER EDUCATION PROGRAMME AT SMJK Jit Sin II SPS – 5th APRIL 2024

On April 5th 2024, Water Watch Penang (WWP) delightedly able the “Negalitres for Schools” River and Water Education Programme at SMJK Jit Sin II SPS, Simpang Ampat, Penang. All the students and teachers were participating in this programme after their official assembly at 8.00 am.

The education session was commenced by Mr. Hanson Yeoh, the Programme Officer of Water Watch Penang (WWP) with the assistance by the interns which are Mr. Dane Lim Chiu Tong, Ms. Fatin Azahara and Ms. Nur Atiqah. The overall of the talk explained about the organisation’s objective, mission, vision, background and achievements that had been done before. Also, global water crisis such as polluted river that needed to be cleaned and treated, challenges that face by Africans in order to bring together the clean water and others was clarified to the students so they would understand more and detailed about the talk.

Apart from that, students were excited with the information and pictures of organisms as biological assessment for the river water quality that had been shown by Mr. Hanson Yeoh. Besides, they acknowledged and focused what had been told and took some important points about the significance of macroinvertebrates in computing the health of a river ecosystem and the surroundings.

SMJK Jit Sin II is one of the ‘Negalitres for Schools Programme’ recipients. While the school has received the installation of water saving equipment, the students were shown a variety of water-saving technologies applicable to both school and home settings. At the session’s conclusion, students utilized their water bills to calculate their daily water usage. The most interesting part that gained students’ interests was quizzes because they got a gift as a reward after they answered the question correctly and wisely. Apart from that, Mr. Hanson Yeoh also highlighted the way of how to save water that could implement at school and their homes due to intensify their understanding about water conservation.

‘Negalitres for Schools,’ launched on March 22, 2022, was coordinated by WWP in partnership with Intel Corporation and CLEAN International, with collaboration from Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) and PBAPP. This project is fully funded by CLEAN International Inc. and Intel Corporation and is supported by the Ministry of Environment and Water and the Penang State Education Department.
