‘NEGALITRES FOR SCHOOL’ : RIVER AND WATER EDUCATION PROGRAMME AT SJK(C) SIN YA – 2ND APRIL 2024

On April 2, 2024, Water Watch Penang (WWP) successfully organized the ‘Negalitres for School’ River and Water Education Programme at SJK (C) Sin Ya. The program engaged 293 students from Standards 6, along with 10 teachers, running from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm.
Under the guidance of Mr. Hanson Yeoh, WWP Programme Officer, and with assistance from WWP interns Mr. Dane Lim Chiu Tong, Ms. Fatin Azahara, and Ms. Nur Atiqah, the session commenced with an extensive overview of WWP’s objectives and past initiatives.
The discussion then delved into global, national, and local water challenges, with a particular emphasis on water scarcity as a prevalent issue requiring community action. Penang’s firsthand experience with water scarcity underscored the urgency of the problem. Moreover, Mr. Hanson elaborated on various methods for assessing river water quality using macroinvertebrates, or bioindicators, such as prawns, crayfish, and nymphs, found in the river.

Additionally, a variety of water-saving techniques applicable to both school and home settings were highlighted. At the session’s conclusion, students utilized their water bills to calculate their daily water usage. Quizzes were administered during the lesson, and students who answered correctly received activity books from Water Watch Penang as a token of appreciation.
Water Watch Penang extends its gratitude to SJKC Sin Ya for hosting this enlightening session at their school. For further inquiries, please contact WWP’s Executive Manager, Dr. Hong Chern Wern, at hong.wwp@gmail.com, or directly reach out to WWP at +6019-5751253.
