On October 10, 2023, for the second consecutive day, Water Watch Penang (WWP) and Xylem SEA successfully conducted a water education program as part of their CSR initiative at SMK Bukit Jambul. The program involved a total of 100 Form 3 students and teachers, led by Ms. Norasiah, from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm.
The session began with an opening speech from Mr. Mohamad Hapiz B Mohd Rosli, Country Head of Xylem Water Solutions Malaysia Sdn Bhd. Mr. Hapiz provided an overview of the company and outlined its efforts in addressing water-related challenges in cities and schools. He also showed a 5-minute video about Xylem’s initiative in helping a group of young Thai soccer team trapped in a cave in 2018.
Next, Dr. Hong Chern Wern continued the session by giving a brief introduction to Water Watch Penang’s vision and mission and its activities throughout the year. To kickstart the education session, he presented awareness-inducing topics about water issues worldwide, focusing on Malaysia and Penang. This session aimed to show and educate the students about the reasons to use water wisely in Malaysia, especially in Penang, which is the highest water consumer in Malaysia despite being a water-poor state.
Subsequently, the students were divided into four groups, with facilitators Mr. Sharvind Sivan, Ms. Khairul Barieyah, Mr. Yee Jean Chai, and Ms. Puteri Nur Atiqah guiding them in calculating their daily water consumption in liters per capita (person) per day, based on their respective PBAPP water bills. Students were able to identify their household water consumption, and water-saving advice and suggestions were provided to students with high water consumption.
In the final session, the students engaged in group discussions, where they were required to present ways and methods to save water using technology and non-technological approaches. This session aimed to actively involve the students and gauge their understanding as well as ideas on water-saving initiatives. Judged by Mr. Hapiz, two teams emerged as winners, receiving mugs and USB thumb drives.
Water Watch Penang extends its appreciation to Xylem South East Asia for the opportunity to be part of the Xylem Watermark CSR Program. WWP would also like to thank SMK Bukit Jambul for the opportunity to conduct this water education program.
