PLANET US PROGRAMME BY BIJI-BIJI INITIATIVES – WATER FOOTPRINT EDUCATION – 14TH NOVEMBER 2022 AT PENANG SCIENCE CLUSTER

14 November 2022: An educational talk session was conducted by Dr Hong Chern Wern, Execution Manager of Water Watch Penang via invitation by Biji-Biji Initiative for SJKC Chong Cheng at Penang Science Cluster. SJKC Chong Cheng is also one of our registered schools in Negalitres programme of Water Watch Penang.

Water Watch Penang was invited under the ‘Planet Us programme’ hosted by Biji-Biji Initiative. Planet Us is a multi-experimental platform to boost environmental sustainability awareness among youth in Malaysia. Their overarching goal is to educate and inspire positive change through a series of online and offline programmes throughout the year and across Malaysia.

The talk conducted was about Water Footprint which is the ‘hidden water’ used by the producer or industry to produce our food, electricity, gas, or home goods. During the talk, Dr. Hong first introduced the types of water footprint which are green water, blue water, and grey water to ensure that the students were able to differentiate different elements of water footprint and recognize them in the following slides. Dr Hong then also showed a variety of items and revealed the water footprint of the items to the students so that they understood how much water was used in their daily-use products. At the end of the session, two students from SJKC Chong Cheng were invited in front to carry out a water footprint calculation to determine how much hidden water is consumed by their families in their daily routines.
