‘NEGALITRES FOR SCHOOLS’ River and Water Education Programme at SJK(C) Wen Khai – 29 July 2022

29 July 2022: Water Watch Penang has successfully coordinated a water education program, namely ‘Negalitres for Schools’ at SJK(C) Wen Khai, Bayan Lepas. This primary school is also on the list of Intel Penang-approved schools.

The program involved a considerable number of students and teachers, 450 students, ranging from Standard 1 to Standard 6, and 31 teachers. Dr. Hong Chern Wern was the head facilitator of the program, assisted by an aquatic science intern, Hanson Yeoh, who was currently undergoing facilitator training.

The water education program as part of ‘Negalitres for Schools’ aimed to increase the rising generation’s awareness of water conservation and reduction of water consumption. The students were first introduced to the global water crisis in low-developed countries and polluted water resources issues in industrialized countries. In addition, the facilitators exposed the students to the local water concerns, including the current status of Penang’s water supply. The students were surprised when the facilitator apprised them of the fact that Penang is under the category of a poor water state in Malaysia.

Moreover, the facilitators elucidated the proper installation steps of ‘Washer,’ which were supplied by the Perbadanan Bekalan Air Pulau Pinang (PBAPP), and its function as a water-saving kit in reducing water wastage. Thereafter, the students were thrilled extraordinarily to do mathematics calculations their own home water bills to determine the water consumption of every family member in a day, along with the explanation of the facilitators step by step. The students were also educated to the idea of monitoring river water quality via physical, chemical, and biological methods. At the midst of the program, students were enlivened with a water quiz where ten coloring books as prizes were given to the students that answered correctly.

This program is coordinated by Water Watch Penang (WWP) in collaboration with CLEAN International, Intel Corporation, and PBAPP. The event ended with a souvenir presentation.
