22 July 2022: As Water Watch Penang (WWP) has prior experience in promoting Rainwater Harvesting technology and its development, Penang Green Council (PGC) invited WWP to give an educational talk about the installation of a Rainwater Harvesting system as a supplementary water resource in tandem with Green Innovation Competition organized at Sentral College, Penang.
More than 40 students and lecturers from Sentral College participated in the talk, including the Principal, Dr. Chiang Geok Lian, and the Project Officer from PGC, who invited WWP for the talk, Mr. Ahmad Uzeir Ahmad Murshid. In addition, Yang Berhormat (YB) Phee Boon Poh attended the event as a special guest. Dr. Hong Chern Wern, the Executive Manager of WWP, gave a talk that exposed the participants to the benefits of Rainwater Harvesting, along with his intern, Mr. Hanson Yeoh.
First, the participants were acquainted with the issues of the global water crisis, as well as the water overconsumption in Penang. Then, the talk was mainly focused on introducing the Rainwater Harvesting System with its benefits and function in reducing water wastage in treated water usage, as it can be used as an additional water source, for example, for flushing and car washing. Additionally, the participants were presented with various designs of Rainwater Harvesting systems for specific purposes previously installed in the participating schools in the educational programme and the community residence. Finally, the participants from Sentral College actively enquired regarding the concerns of setting up a Rainwater Harvesting system since the college planned to install one of those in the future.
After the end of the talk, Dr. Hong visited the rooftop of the building to obtain a better idea and suggestion for the college to install a Rainwater Harvesting system without risk.
