Giant Hypermarket Green Campaign

Giant Hypermarket in Bayan Baru, Penang launched its Green Living Campaign on 19 July 2009. The event was officiated and officially opened by the Honourable Chief Minister of Penang YAB Tuan Lim Guan Eng, accompanied by EXCO for Environment YB Phee Boon Pooh. Giant Supermarket supports the Penang State Government's "Say No to Plastic Bags on Monday" campaign. It does not give out plastic bags free on Mondays but charges customers who want plastic bags. The proceeds all go to charity. Other than this, Giant has initiated its energy saving campaign by switching to LED light bulbs, turning up the temperature of its air-conditioning, green designs for its buildings, using of green raw materials, etc. During the lauch, Giant gave out RM19,000.00 to charities and NGOs. water Watch Penang was one of the NGOs that received RM3000.00 from Giant.
