A leading NGO activist ,Anwar Fazal ,has been awarded the Langkawi Environmental Award by the Government of Malaysia on World Enviromnent Day 2008.

The Award ,which includes a certificate from Yang di-Pertuan Agong (the King of Malaysia) and a cash prize  is to honour Anwar's many pioneering accomplishments in the environment field ,locally and globally.

The Award was presented to him at a special ceremony the mark World Environment Day (June 5) by the wife of the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Datin Seri Jeanne Abdullah.

The Award was initiated to mark the Langkawi Declaration on the Environment adopted by at a meeting of the Heads of Governments of the Commonwealth of Nations on 21 October 1989..

BIO DATA OF ANWAR FAZAL

Anwar has been involved in local and global environment issues for four decades, originally with the Consumers Association of Penang(CAP), which he founded in 1969,and later as President of the International Organisation of Consumers Unions(IOCU), where he founded "Consumer Interpol" and the Pesticides Action Network(PAN). He also
served as Chairperson of the Environmental Laison Centre International, based in Nairobi, Kenya, and was the inaugural Chairperson of Wetlands International Asia-Pacific.
He served for over a decade with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as Senior Regional Adviser on governance issues relating to the urban environment
in the Asia -Pacific Region. He played an active and leading role in getting several international UN instruments on environment and consumer issues including the code of ethics on the sale and distribution of pesticides, and also in establishing World Wetlands Day. He is also a co-founder of Transparency International Malaysia and was  associated as resource person with one of the earliest UN regional conferences on Corruption and the Environment. For his work on the environment, Anwar has been  honored internationally:- 

# he is a recipient of the Right Livelihood Award",popularly known as the "Alternative Nobel Prize'

# he is listed on the "Environmental Hall of Fame" of Mother Earth News, USA

# he was elected to the 'GLOBAL 500' by the United Nations Environment Programme(UNEP)

Currently,Anwar is Vice Chairperson of Sahabat Alam Malaysia(SAM),

Chairperson Emeritus of the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action(WABA),

Director, Citizen International,

Vice Chairperson, Pesticides Action Network Asia Pacific,

Chairperson of The Taiping Peace Initiative and the Malaysian Interfaith Network(MIN)

Advisor, Water Watch Penang.

Anwar also serves on the Jury of the Goldman Environmental Prize, the world's largest award for grassroots environmentalists, and on the international advisory panel of Seacology, which works on issue relating to small island environments.

Anwar also co-chairs the recently established University Sains Malaysia/United Nations University Regional Centre of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development(RCE/ESD).

Anwar's prime source for his continuing enthusiasm and learning are long walks in the forests of Penang and Taiping, Malaysia.
